Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow in Indigenous Theology

The Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Sherlock has announced the appointment of Rev Dr Garry Deverell as the inaugural Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow in Indigenous Theology at the University of Divinity. This new part-time position is part of the University’s Strategic Goal to develop Indigenous theological research by and for Indigenous peoples, and is supported by the University’s Indigenous Theologies Fund.

Dr Deverell is a Trawloolway man and author of Gondwana Theology (Morning Star Press, 2018) and The Bonds of Freedom (Paternoster, 2008). He is presently Vicar of St Agnes’ Anglican Church, Black Rock in Melbourne and a member of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican Council. He is a graduate of the University of Tasmania, Melbourne College of Divinity, and Monash University (where he completed doctoral studies in 2004). He has held the Sanderson Fellowship at the Uniting Church Theological College and the Turner Fellowship at Trinity College Theological School, both within the University of Divinity, and has contributed to the collaboration between Whitley College, the University of Divinity, and NAIITS to deliver a curriculum in Indigenous Theology in Australia.

Professor Sherlock said:

I am honoured that Dr Deverell has accepted appointment as the University’s inaugural Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow. I look forward to the contribution Garry will bring to the University of Divinity in a new way, through research, publication, and providing mentoring and support for current and emerging Indigenous theologians within and beyond the University.
