Teaching and Learning Webinar | Constructive Alignment in the Age of GenAI

Tuesday, 29 April, 2:00 pm3:30 pm AEST

Online Workshop Description

This hands-on workshop explores the role of learning outcomes in designing effective educational experiences in an era transformed by generative AI. Participants will engage with practical strategies for aligning learning outcomes, assessment methods, and teaching activities to create meaningful learning experiences that remain relevant and robust in the age of AI.

The workshop will guide educators through reconceptualising constructive alignment principles to address the challenges and leverage the opportunities presented by generative AI technologies in higher education. Through collaborative activities and guided discussions, participants will develop applied approaches to designing learning experiences that promote authentic learning while acknowledging the realities of AI tools in academic contexts.

Workshop Structure:

  1. Acknowledgement of Country
  2. Introductions
  3. Designing Better Learning Outcomes
  4. Assessment Design for the Age of AI
  5. Teaching for Learning in the Age of GenAI

Join us to explore how constructive alignment principles can be adapted to create learning environments that prepare students for a world where AI is an integral part of professional and academic life.

with Associate Professor Iain Doherty
Associate Director Learning Innovation (ArtsEd), Deakin University (SFHEA)

Iain’s Bachelor’s Degree was in Religious Studies at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, a degree with subjects covering all of the world’s major religions. Iain then completed a Master of Letters at the same university focussing on the apparently conflicting truth claims of the world’s religions in the context of exploring a universalist view on religious truth claims. Finally, Iain completed a PhD at the Faculty of Divinity, University of Edinburgh focussing on the conditions under which a person might be justified in claiming to know that God exists.

Iain then decided to take a different life direction and after following something of a winding path, Iain has spent the last twenty years in teaching and learning leadership positions, first at the University of Auckland, then at the University of Hong Kong and finally at Deakin University. At Deakin Iain leads a central teaching and learning team embedded in the faculty of Arts and Education operationalising institutional priorities, providing teaching and learning leadership, supporting curriculum development, ensuring the quality and integrity of teaching, and providing professional development.

with Dr Francesca Bussey
Learning Futures – ArtsEd (SFHEA) Deakin University

Fran was once described as the poster child for academic rehabilitation. Having left formal education at 15, she returned to study at 22 completing a Bachelor of Arts program at Sydney University. There, she distinguished herself by graduating with First Class Honours in medieval history. Fran’s academic promise was recognised through a doctoral scholarship, culminating in the conferral of her PhD in 2008. Her thesis examines the interstices of power, religion and resistance in medieval Europe, through the life and death of medieval mystic Marguerite Porete, executed for heresy in Paris in 1310.

Though Latin proved a bridge too far for continued medieval scholarship, Fran has maintained a vibrant career in higher education. Her growing interest in educational theory prompted her to pursue a Diploma of Education, which led to her current role. As a Senior Lecturer in Deakin Learning Futures, Fran spearheads innovative teaching and learning initiatives for the Faculty of Arts and Education. Her current scholarly focus centres on the implications of generative artificial intelligence for higher education, particularly in terms of the evolving challenges for assessment and learning in the humanities and creative arts.
