In the wake of Leo XIII’s social teaching, the 1917 essay Eucharistie und Arbeit (Eucharist and Work) by the Polish–German Jesuit philosopher and theologian, Erich Przywara, reflects on the dynamic relation between the “work” of the Mass and the work of human labour in the Christian life. When engaged with a eucharistic attitude, human labour can be a pathway to holiness and a means for the transformation of the world in Christ. The recent teaching of Leo XIV reflects on new challenges confronting human work in the age of artificial intelligence. What can we learn from the Eucharist to safeguard the dignity of “the work of human hands”?

Engaging Your Faith is a series of short, online presentations that invite participants to reflect on what it means to be people of faith in the contemporary world. Experienced academics from Catholic Theological College present on a variety of topics.
