Hagiography and the Cult of Saints

Why do Christians venerate saints? Are the biographies of saints just pious fiction? Where did pilgrimage come from? How do relics of saints connect people to the divine? These are just some of the questions that you can explore in our Semester 2 Unit on Hagiography and the Cult of Saints.

This unit will introduce students to the literary genre of hagiography – writing about saints – and the interrelationship between hagiographical text, liturgy and iconography in establishing the cult of a saint. Students will follow the developments of the hagiographical genre and the associated cult of the saints from their origins through Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and consider the role of the saints in the present day.
