The Salvation Army Explores AI with Theological Insights

The Salvation Army’s Moveworks Taskforce is developing a chatbot using Artificial Intelligence and wanted to ensure that appropriate ethical and theological considerations were undertaken. EBC’s Professor Glen O’Brien was invited to present a seminar on ‘Artificial Intelligence: Risks and Benefits’ at THQ in Blackburn on 25 March 2025. He pointed out how, since the days of the Booths, The Salvation Army has always utilised the most cutting- edge technology to enhance its mission.

The appearance of increasingly sophisticated forms of AI require us to seek wisdom about its use, especially in regard to its impact on people and society. To the extent that advanced technology contributes to human flourishing, we should embrace it enthusiastically. At the same time, we need to ensure that humans always remain at the wheel and that the goals of AI remans aligned with our own values and goals.
