Whitley College is delighted to announce that Rev Dr Andrew (Andy) Mitchell has been appointed as our incoming Academic Dean and Senior Lecturer in Baptist Studies, commencing 1 January 2026. Andy will work alongside our Interim Academic Dean, Dr Megan Turton, throughout the remainder of this calendar year to ensure a smooth and supportive transition.
Andy is recognised for his ability to bring theology into meaningful conversation with real-world ministry. He is passionate about contextual theology, attentive to culture, and deeply committed to the life and mission of the church. His contributions in Practical Theology, Indigenous engagement, and Baptist identity are valued by students and recognised by colleagues across Whitley and the broader Baptist community. His long-standing engagement with the Baptist Union of Victoria (BUV) and its churches, including his valued support of BUV ordinands, reflects his commitment to nurturing thoughtful, well-formed ministry leaders across Victoria.
Andy has previously served as Director of Project Development and Lecturer in Practical Theology & Ministry. His doctoral research explored how Baptist churches in Victoria might think theologically about their relationships with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, a project that continues to inform his teaching, partnerships, and leadership. Beyond Whitley, Andy is part of the global faculty of NAIITS: An Indigenous Learning Community and serves on the NAIITS Journal editorial team.
Known for his grounded pastoral presence, thoughtful scholarship, and community-focused approach to learning, Andy brings a rare blend of theological depth, relational strength, and cross-cultural sensitivity. His care for community, attention to pedagogy, and passion for Indigenous engagement and global collaboration make him an extraordinary asset to Whitley.
As incoming Academic Dean, Andy will guide Whitley’s academic vision, uphold excellence in teaching and learning, and support students preparing for ministry and leadership in diverse cultural and congregational settings. His appointment marks an important moment as Whitley strengthens its academic leadership for the years ahead.
We also express our deep gratitude to Dr Megan Turton for stepping into the Interim Academic Dean role during a significant and demanding season. Megan has led with professionalism, generosity, stability, and a strong commitment to academic integrity. Her contributions to the University of Divinity Academic Board have also been greatly appreciated. We look forward to Megan returning to her teaching and research with renewed space and energy.
Andy’s appointment ushers in a hopeful and exciting new chapter for Whitley College. We invite our community to join us in congratulating Rev Dr Andrew Mitchell and praying for him as he prepares to step into this vital role.
