New course available for study in Hong Kong

The Graduate Certificate in Teaching Religious Education is a course of the University of Divinity, which Catholic Theological College (CTC) has offered for many years. This course has been designed specifically for teachers and school leaders engaged in religious education at Catholic Schools. We are delighted that we can now offer it in Hong Kong through our partnership with Caritas Institute of Higher Education (CIHE). Each of the four units allows you to engage with particular aspects of the Catholic faith tradition. While the Sacred Scripture unit is focussed on the Bible as the foundation of the Christian tradition, it does this in the context of the sacred texts of other world religions.  Teachers and school leaders who complete this unit will have deepened their understanding of the biblical texts and will have an enhanced capacity to draw on and interpret biblical texts within the classroom context. The two theology units provide an opportunity to reflect on the human search for meaning, God as revealed in Jesus Christ, the Church as the believing community, the sacraments, and the implications of Christian faith for daily living. There is a particular focus on Christian values and growing in virtue according to the Christian understanding of the virtuous person. The final unit offers the opportunity to reflect on the pedagogy of religious education as it considers the principles and practices of the discipline. Together these units offer opportunities to explore the following questions:

  • How do we read the Bible in our modern context?
  • How do we talk about God today?
  • Is there a connection between religious belief and our daily living?
  • Which approaches to religious education are helpful today?

While the fourth unit engages directly with the school curriculum, it is our experience that teachers find the opportunity for personal theological engagement with their own faith offered by the first three units both challenging and exciting. They find themselves on a journey in their own faith and in their roles as religious educators. I hope you too will discover this and be drawn to ongoing theological study.

– Very Reverend Associate Professor Shane Mackinlay, Master of Catholic Theological College
