New Archbishops appointed for Brisbane and Hobart

The University of Divinity congratulates two members of its community on being appointed by Pope Leo XIV as Australian Archbishops.

The Most Reverend Associate Professor Shane Mackinlay has been appointed as the seventh Archbishop of Brisbane. He is currently the Bishop of Sandhurst, in regional Victoria and was previously the Master of Catholic Theological College within the University of Divinity (2011-2019). He is also a member of the University’s alumni community, having completed a Bachelor of Theology at the (then) Melbourne College of Divinity.

The Most Reverend Dr Anthony Ireland has been appointed as the twelfth Archbishop of Hobart. He is currently an auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Melbourne and has previously served in academic and spiritual formation roles. Bishop Ireland joined the faculty of Catholic Theological College in 1993, where he lectured in moral theology and later served as head of the Department of Moral and Practical Theology for eight years.

The Master of Catholic Theological College, Dr Kevin Lenehan, has welcomed these announcements. “We know that these two alumni and former faculty members of CTC will bring their strong skills, rich experience and personal gifts to their new ministries. We ask God’s blessings for them and for the local churches they will now shepherd.”
