New appointments to the University Council

The Council of the University of Divinity is constituted under the University of Divinity Act 1910 and accountable to the Victorian Parliament through the Minister for Higher Education. The Council’s constitution provides for up to 16 members, some of whom are appointed by the University’s stakeholder churches, and some of whom are appointed by the Council itself

In the first half of 2025, the University Council has welcomed two new members:

The Reverend Stephen Field has been appointed by the Baptist Union of Victoria. Stephen is the Senior Pastor at Canterbury Baptist Church, as well as being an adjunct lecturer at Whitley College, where he teaches mainly New Testament Greek. He has a Bachelor of Theology and a Master of Theology from the University of Divinity through Whitley College, and is currently undertaking a PhD. As well as being a pastor of nearly 20 years’ experience, Stephen has experience in human resources and media production, and has held board-level positions at a number of community organisations.

The Right Reverend Chris McLeod has been appointed by the Council. Bishop Chris, a Gurindji man, is the National Aboriginal Bishop of the Anglican Church of Australia, an assistant bishop in the diocese of Adelaide, and Dean of St Peter’s Cathedral. He has been in ordained ministry for 31 years and has served parishes in the Diocese of Adelaide and the Diocese of Willochra. He is a foundational member of the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Anglican Council, and a member of the Anglican Indigenous Network. Bishop Chris is also a sessional lecturer at St Barnabas College, and has taught units on Indigenous theology for the University of Divinity.

We welcome both Stephen and Chris to the Council, and look forward to the important contributions that they will make to the life of the University.
