Celebrating Hany Takla: A Trailblazer in Coptic Studies

St Athanasius College (SAC) warmly congratulates Hany Takla on his recent recognition by Marquis Who’s Who as a distinguished leader in the field of Coptic Studies. This prestigious honour reflects his decades of tireless dedication to scholarship, mentorship, and the preservation of Coptic heritage.

As founder of the St Shenouda the Archimandrite Coptic Society, Hany has built one of the most comprehensive libraries of Coptic and Copto-Arabic resources in North America. His generosity in sharing these resources as well as mentoring emerging scholars has shaped the careers of many leading figures in the field.

The annual UCLA/St Shenouda Society Coptic Studies conference, which Hany co-organises, continues to serve as a cornerstone of scholarly exchange, drawing world-class academics and fostering collaboration across institutions. His Society also provides financial support to major international projects such as the University of Göttingen’s Coptic Bible Project and the Coptic ScriptoriumIn addition, his Society provides travel grants to scholars who are Egyptian nationals to attend conferences abroad.

Hany’s partnership with SAC’s St Paul’s Manuscript Project includes support for documenting Biblical manuscripts—his area of specialisation—and the sponsorship of a fully funded PhD scholarship at Claremont Graduate University. In 2024, he taught two new units at SAC on Coptic Liturgical Manuscripts, further enriching the College’s academic offerings.

We celebrate Hany’s enduring impact on the field and his unwavering commitment to advancing Coptic Studies worldwide.
