Wollaston Research Seminar | March

Join us either in-person or online for the first Wollaston Research Seminar of the year. Dr Megan Warner to present: Looking for Origins: An Intertextual Reading of Genesis 22.
Abstract: In his influential commentary on Genesis, Gerhard von Rad cautioned against interpreters reaching the conclusion that any single interpretation of Gen 22:1–19 could hope to capture the meaning of the passage. The vast number of intertexts alongside which exegetes have read Gen 22:1 – 19 in recent years have done nothing to limit Genesis 22’s available horizon of interpretation, but have only further expanded the interpretive possibilities. This paper reads Gen 22:1–19 alongside 2 Samuel 24 and 1 Chronicles for the purpose of assessing the influence of the story of David’s census upon the Akedah, and exploring some of the more surprising implications, including those of a source-critical nature.
