Join Trinity College Theological School for a research seminar presented by Associate Professor Rachelle Gilmour on Wednesday 13th May 2026, available in-person and online.

Presenter: Rachelle Gilmour

When: May 13, 2-3PM,

Where: OWL South, Trinity College Theological School, 100 Royal Parade, Parkville VIC (and online)

This paper examines the portrayal of royal mothers, wives, daughters, and a sister in the book of Chronicles, particularly as it is distinct from the portrayal in Samuel-Kings. Elite women are thought to have retained the traditions of their fathers rather than adapting to the traditions of their husbands in the postexilic period, and kings are influenced by both their patrilineal and matrilineal descent. This paper argues that royal wives have little political or cultic influence on their husbands in the portrayal of Chronicles, but daughters and sisters stay loyal to their fathers’ house.
