Australian Christian Nationalism: a unique minority threat

Australian Christian nationalism looks different from its more famous American counterpart — subtler, less partisan, without the rhetoric of divine exceptionalism or apocalypse. Relying on the mythology of a white Christian nation and reflecting a culturalised Christianism, its national imaginary is fundamentally about belonging: where Australia ‘belongs’ in the world, and who, rightfully, belongs in Australia. Poulos argues that in an increasingly diverse Australia, this vision serves a dangerous, polarising populism — undermining the richer, more diverse account of Christian faith needed for the common good.
