Title and Abstract

Are Ancient and Modern Exegetes at Odds with Each Other? Questions and Answers

Modern exegetes value patristic and rabbinic exegesis for understanding biblical interpretation. However, they often perceive these approaches as fundamentally different in method and intent from their own. Some scholars find these ancient approaches puzzling and arbitrary, and have valid reasons for this perspective. The presentation will aim to explain and illustrate the distinctive characteristics of ancient and modern exegetical modes. Fr Kris will also discuss ways to incorporate ancient modes into modern exegetical practice. The presentation will be structured as a series of questions and answers, based on the reactions to his recent papers delivered in Melbourne, Manila, and Chicago.
