Due to personal circumstances, Professor James McLaren has taken the decision to step down as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Divinity. He will conclude his term on 2nd October 2026. Professor McLaren intends to resume his significant scholarly work and will focus on several long-standing research projects. The Council of the University has accepted Professor McLaren’s resignation with both regret and understanding.
Professor McLaren is an internationally acclaimed scholar of ancient Jewish, Roman and Early Christian Studies, and one of the leading international experts in the study of the life and times of Flavius Josephus. He is a recipient of the prestigious Krister Stendahl Medal for his contributions to the profession. The Council wishes Professor McLaren well as he returns to full-time scholarship.
Since becoming Vice-Chancellor in April 2024, Professor McLaren’s leadership of the University has been first class. He has built an effective executive team and significantly advanced the implementation of the University’s Strategic Plan 2030. He has developed strong and trusted relationships with the University’s College Principals and with their sponsoring Church bodies. The Council is grateful for the significant contribution Professor McLaren has made to the University during his tenure.
Professor Megan Cassidy-Welch, currently Dean of Research Strategy, will undertake the role of interim Vice-Chancellor from Monday, 5th October 2026. The Council will shortly move to set up a search committee to oversee the process of appointing the next Vice-Chancellor.
