About the Office of the Vice-Chancellor

The Office of the Vice-Chancellor (OVC) provides shared services to the University’s staff and students and to the University’s Council, Academic Board, Schools and Colleges in the areas of finance, governance, information technology, operations, and student services. The OVC is located at St Paschal’s Estate, 90 Albion Road, Box Hill, Victoria.

Position Description:
Dean of Learning and Teaching

The Dean of Learning and Teaching is responsible for coordinating and managing the University’s learning and teaching related activity, including oversight of academic quality assurance and the effective application of the Higher Education Standards Framework.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the development and delivery of academic quality assurance and the management of academic risk relating to coursework awards and units.
  • Ensure consistency of compliance with University regulations and Academic Board policies governing learning and teaching related activities across the University’s Colleges.
  • Lead the development and implementation of the Learning and Teaching Plan across the University’s Colleges.
  • Model excellence in the scholarship of learning and teaching and co-ordinate professional development opportunities for the academic staff of the University in the scholarship of learning and teaching.
  • Ensure plans and activities across the University’s Colleges are in place to support and enhance a culture of Assurance of Learning and Academic Integrity.
  • Oversee the analysis and reporting on student performance and quality learning experiences across the University.
  • Other duties as reasonably required by the Vice-Chancellor.

Working relationships

The Dean of Learning and Teaching:

  • Reports to the Vice-Chancellor.
  • Works closely with the Chair of Academic Board, the Academic Deans of the Colleges and staff in the Office of Vice-Chancellor (OVC).
  • Supervises the Academic Compliance Manager and the Student Services Manager.
  • Liaises with relevant external Learning and Teaching networks, agencies and regulators, including TEQSA.
  • Is a member of the University Executive, Academic Board, Chair of the Learning and Teaching Committee, and regularly participates in the Academic Deans Forum.

Selection Criteria

Essential

  • PhD or equivalent in theology, education, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in the delivery and management of higher education coursework awards, quality assurance functions, and policy and procedure development and implementation.
  • Competency and experience in the use of relevant online systems and tools (e.g. Learning Management Systems).
  • Demonstrated capability to generate and analyse data for quality assurance and compliance purposes related to learning and teaching.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in the scholarship of learning and teaching.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the capacity to express complex ideas and to prepare detailed reports in a concise and timely manner.

Desirable

  • Experience leading a team and chairing committees.
  • Experience in stakeholder engagement relevant to the delivery of quality learning and teaching outcomes, especially in relation to the Higher Education Standards.
  • Experience in developing new and/or reviewing existing higher education courses for accreditation purposes.

Key performance indicators

KPIs will be negotiated with the successful candidate.

Terms and conditions

The position of Dean of Learning and Teaching is a full-time, ongoing appointment, subject to completion of a six-month probationary period and satisfactory performance.

The position will be remunerated under the Higher Education Industry – Academic Staff award on the University’s salary scale at either Level D or Level E (plus 12% superannuation and 17.5% annual leave loading), commensurate with experience.
