The Common Good in Post-Secular Australia

Friday, 20 March, 12:30 pm1:30 pm AEDT

Dr. David Tittensor Senior Lecturer in Islamic Studies in the Asia Institute, University of Melbourne. Co-author (with Adam Possamai), Religion and Change in Australia (Routledge, 2022)

The emergence of a ‘post-secular’ Australia has enormous import for Australian social policy research and practice, and for public theologians in particular. The late twentieth century ‘liberal secular’ consensus largely removed theology from the public sphere increasingly rationalised in terms of a utilitarian sum of individual self interest. Tittensor examines the 21st century re-emergence of religion in the public policy space and its implications for remaking Common Good policies in Australia.

These Policy Workshops are designed enable us to develop our thinking on the Common Good in dialogue first with research colleagues from around Australia and overseas; and second, with practitioners and citizens concerned with best policy practice.
