Library Hub Style Guide Update 2026

The Library Hub Style Guide has recently been updated to align with the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS, 18th ed. 2024) and is now available via the University of Divinity (University) Library Hub. This update ensures that students, faculty, and researchers across all Colleges have access to current and authoritative guidance for academic writing and referencing in theological studies.

The University is committed to the use of one basic referencing style for theology courses, supporting clarity, consistency, and academic integrity across coursework, teaching, and research. With the adoption of CMOS, 18th ed. the Library Hub Style Guide has been fully revised and now supersedes the previous 17th ed. as the authoritative standard for citation and formatting in University of Divinity academic work.

The Library Hub Style Guide provides practical, accessible guidance on citation and referencing practices aligned with Chicago style and tailored to theological scholarship. The guide is designed to assist all users in presenting scholarly writing that meets recognised academic standards through accurate, consistent citation of information sources.

In areas of study such as counselling and education, alternative forms of referencing may be required (e.g. APA). It is recommended that students consult with the unit lecturer or tutor for guidance on referencing styles.

The University of Divinity Style Guide has 3 parts:

  1. Guide to Referencing
    • Scholarly Works
    • Other Sources
    • Ancient Texts
    • Bible
    • Church and Government Documents
  2. Academic Writing
  3. Presenting Assignments

1.       Other Styles
2.       Citation Tools

Note: At this time, the Library Hub catalogue citation tool has not been updated to reflect changes and is still referencing Chicago Manual of Style, 17th ed. Users are advised to check for missing data, indentation, or formatting issues when copying and pasting citations, and to refer to the Library Hub Style Guide or the online version of the Chicago Manual of Style to ensure citation accuracy.

Visit your home College library for more information on the Library Hub Style Guide.
