Should we upgrade humanity? New resource helps Christians make sense of transhumanism

What would life look like if we could live longer, boost our intelligence, and improve our physical abilities with a little technological help? Humanity 2.0? Christian Perspectives on Transhumanism, a new resource from ISCAST–Christianity & Science in Conversation, unpacks these vital questions and more.

Across eight integrated discussion papers and 120 pages, experts in science, technology, faith, and ethics explore topics related to transhumanism and the future of humanity.

Published in October 2025, this is the first Australian Christian publication that discusses the history and philosophy of the transhumanist movement, current and imminent technological advancements, and how we might grapple with the cultural and ethical challenges ahead.

“Transhumanism is already shaping how we think about what it means to be human, and its influence will dominate our thinking this century,” says Rev. Dr Chris Mulherin, ISCAST Executive Director.

“This is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how their Christian faith relates to the rapidly changing frontiers of science, technology, and human identity.”

The publication explores multiple perspectives, including Christian arguments in favour and opposed to transhumanism.

Jonathan Gunnell, one of the publication’s authors and Vice President of the Christian Transhumanist Association says: “Are transhumanists standing in the place where God should be? Should we decry these as the anti-Christ? Not from the perspective of Christian transhumanism. Christians have generally been leaders in scientific breakthroughs and promoters of technology.”

However, publication editor Paul Sheehan says: “Using technology to enhance the natural order warrants caution: manipulating nature can open the door to objectifying human life and facilitating the exertion of power over other people.”

The publication is available in digital and print formats at iscast.org/transhumanism.

ISCAST–Christianity and Science in Conversation is a network of people, from students and lay people to distinguished academics, exploring the interface of science, technology, and Christian faith.
