Trinity College appoints a new Warden

Congratulations to the Reverend Professor Russell Goulbourne, who has been appointed to the role of ninth Warden of Trinity College.

Russell is currently Professor of French Literature at the University of Melbourne, where from 2019 until 2024 he was Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He is an alum of the University of Divinity (Trinity College Theological School) and was ordained in the Diocese of Melbourne in 2021.

Russell brings outstanding academic credentials and a long-standing career in tertiary education across leading institutions. He completed his Bachelor of Arts, Master of Studies and Doctor of Philosophy at Keble College at the University of Oxford in the UK. He then taught in the Department of French at the University of Leeds (2000-2013), first as Lecturer and then as a Senior Lecturer and then as Professor of Early Modern French Literature. He served as Head of the Department from 2008 until 2011.

In 2014 Russell moved to King’s College London as Professor of French Literature and was Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Humanities from 2014 until 2018.

Russell’s leadership style and experience, combined with his strong alignment with the College’s vision and values, and his genuine enthusiasm for the Trinity community were evident throughout the selection process. These qualities made a strong impression on the selection committee and affirmed that he is the right person for this very important role. Throughout the selection process, Russell presented a compelling vision for Trinity’s future—as a globally excellent institution in service of the community.
