Dorothy Lee appointed Professor Emerita of the University

In recognition of her long and distinguished service to Trinity College Theological School and the University of Divinity, and previously to the United Faculty of Theology and the Melbourne College of Divinity, the Council appointed Dorothy Lee as Professor Emerita of the University of Divinity, on 14 August 2024.

Reverend Canon Professor Emerita Dorothy Lee AM FAHA has taught New Testament at the University of Divinity and previously the Melbourne College of Divinity for over 30 years, and was one of the ten inaugural Professors of the University appointed in 2012. She is an accomplished, prolific, and disciplined scholar, internationally recognised and sought-after in her area of specialisation, the Gospel of John. Dorothy is a beloved teacher and mentor to many students and colleagues. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities.

Dorothy remains an active Anglican Priest in the Diocese of Melbourne, and her scholarship continues to contribute meaningfully to the life of the wider Church, in particular through her passionate advocacy for the ministry of women. In 2024, Dorothy was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for her important contributions and service to the Anglican Church of Australia.

About the appointment, Dorothy said:

I am deeply honoured to be named as Professor Emerita and I look forward very much to continuing my happy association with this acclaimed body and its scholars, teachers and students.

To be appointed as an Emeritus Professor of the University a person must have rendered sustained and exceptional service, through leadership or personal performance, which has added to the reputation of the University. Dorothy is the ninth person appointed Emeritus Professor of the University.

Dorothy will be publicly acknowledged and thanked at the University’s upcoming graduation ceremony in Melbourne on Friday 21 March 2025, at which she will give the Graduation Address.
