At Trinity College, we are deeply committed to our Anglican heritage. In support of our vision to be globally recognised as a leading theological education and research institution, two scholarships for full-time PhD candidates will be awarded for our Theological School, commencing in 2020. These transformational scholarships include course fee remission and a living allowance.
The scholarships celebrate the vision, intellect and achievements of James Moorhouse, the second Bishop of Melbourne, who established the Theological School at Trinity in 1878.
Eligibility
To be eligible, students must:
- meet the academic and admission requirements of the University of Divinity PhD program
- plan to study full-time through the Trinity College Theological School
- have their research topic approved by Trinity College
- be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or international student who can attain a valid student visa prior to commencement.
Fields of research
Applications are encouraged from scholars who wish to pursue doctoral research in any of the following fields:
- New Testament and Christian Origins
- Old Testament/Hebrew Bible
- Modern Systematic Theology
- Anglican Identity and Mission

Value and duration
Total value of $132,000AUD.
- 100% University of Divinity fee remission for three years of a full-time doctorate degree, currently valued at $51,000
- three-year living allowance, valued at around $27,000 per year (total $81,000)
Special conditions
- Scholarships cannot be deferred.
- Scholarships cannot be taken up at other colleges of the University of Divinity.
- Students must successfully enrol at the University of Divinity following the usual PhD application process after discussing their proposed research topic with Trinity.
- Prospective candidates may negotiate to commence in semester two of 2020 by contacting the Trinity College Theological School registrar at tcts@trinity.edu.au
- Scholarship recipients must meet the University of Divinity’s expectations for academic progress, and the scholarship may be withdrawn if satisfactory progress or full-time enrolment is not maintained.
Closing dates
For commencement in Semester 1, 2020 (February):
- Australian students – 30 September 2019
- Overseas students – 30 June 2019.
For commencement in Semester 2, 2020 (July):
- Australian students – 31 March 2020
- Overseas students – 30 October 2019
