Professor John Flett

John Flett appointed Professor of the University

Congratulations to Reverend Professor John Flett, appointed a Professor of the University of Divinity by the University Council on 17 June 2020. Professor Flett is currently the Coordinator of Studies in Missiology and Intercultural Theology at Pilgrim Theological College. He is noted for his outstanding contribution to Research, Leadership in the Academy, and Learning and Teaching.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Sherlock, said that:

Professor Flett has made an impressive contribution to theological scholarship, research and leadership. His expertise in intercultural theology and Christian mission in its encounter with diverse cultural and church contexts are great gifts to the University of Divinity, and an international community of scholars. I am delighted that the University and our wider community will continue to benefit from his leadership and commitment to local and international collaboration.”

The citation for the appointment reads:

Professor Flett is an internationally recognised expert in the theology and practice of Christian mission, especially in its encounter with diverse cultural and church contexts. His scholarly research on a wide range of intersecting themes enriches his teaching in ways that both inspire and set an example for students. Professor Flett has been invited to teach in many parts of the world and his numerous publications on a rich array of topics have led to further invitations to contribute to distinguished symposia and publications. In a variety of local contexts, he has consistently sought to bring the riches of his research and international collaborations into fruitful dialogue with the diverse challenges of congregational life and witness. All of these activities and achievements constitute an outstanding contribution to the University of Divinity, to the wider community of scholars and to the Church.”
