SUMMARY:Australian Christian Nationalism: a unique minority threat
DESCRIPTION:Australian Christian nationalism looks different from its more famous American counterpart — subtler\, less partisan\, without the rhetoric of divine exceptionalism or apocalypse. Relying on the mythology of a white Christian nation and reflecting a culturalised Christianism\, its national imaginary is fundamentally about belonging: where Australia ‘belongs’ in the world\, and who\, rightfully\, belongs in Australia. DESCRIPTION:Join artist Helen Sherriff to hear about her favourite works from the last 50 years or so. \nA retrospective of Helen’s work is on display at the ALC Library as part of the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) festival\, all through August. \nHelen Sherriff is an experienced\, award winning artist who graduated with Honours in Visual Art (University of South Australia\, 2013) but her art career began as a commercial artist in 1969. Art teaching\, community art work\, murals\, solo and group exhibitions followed. Her techniques and traditions include painting\, woodcarving\, textiles\, and iconography. “I use old\, often broken things\, repurposed and redirected\, as lives can be. The original brokenness works alongside the newness\, adding strength. DESCRIPTION:Lecture by Sr Teresa Obolevitch\, Professor of Philosophy of God and Religion at the Pontifical University of John Paul II in Krakow\, Poland. \nSr Teresa has been invited to give this lecture by the Religion and Social Policy Network of the University of Divinity. \n____ \n \nBorn in 1974\, S. Tereza defended her MA thesis at the Theological Institute in Tarnów\, affiliated with the Pontifical Academy of Theology in Kraków\, in 2002. In 2005\, she obtained her doctorate in philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Polish Academy of Sciences\, where she has been working since 2006. In 2012\, S. Tereza received her habilitation\, and in 2018\, the academic title of professor of humanities. S. Tereza is the: \n\nChair of the Department of Philosophy of God and Religion;\nMember of the Copernicus Center for Interdisciplinary Research in Krakow;\nMember of Accademia Ambrosiana in Milan and a member of the Advisory Board of Northwestern University Research Initiative in Russian Philosophy\, Literature\, and Religious Thought;\nA member of the Philosophy of Sciences Commission of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 2019)\nPart of the Committee on Philosophical Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences (from 2016-2019 and currently the 2020-2023 term).\n\nS. SUMMARY:Tour CTC as part of Open House Melbourne Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Catholic Theological College will again be welcoming visitors as part of the 2026 Open House Melbourne Weekend. \nThe site comprises a bluestone building\, designed by William Wardell\, that housed Catholic secondary schools (Parade College 1871–1967 & Cathedral College 1968–94) and a new building designed by Gregory Burgess. \nThe stability and formality of the original building contrasts with the fluidity of the new—the past and future are both alive in this new facility. A crisp\, transparent connection links the buildings at two levels\, allowing the new to grow out of the old with respect and unity. \nThe site was the winner of the 2001 Heritage Property Award of the Australian Property Institute\, and received a commendation in the 2000 Victorian Architecture Awards of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects. \nA brochure will be available for visitors to do a self-guided tour of the building. \nThe open day is free of charge and no bookings are required.

Read more about the series here. \nPresented by Dr Claire Renkin\, Yarra Theological Union\, University of Divinity \nStanley Spencer (1891 – 1959) is one of the most celebrated and idiosyncratic English painters of the 20th century. Born in Cookham on the Thames\, Spencer rarely worked outside his village and its vicinity. Scripture and Christian revelation inspired him above all\, as he depicted people and places of his home in a visual language all his own. Working alone\, almost defiantly\, he crafted paintings full of passion and energy that catch not just a sense of life now\, but what lies behind it: he evokes something greater than all of us. Thoroughly anti-urban and anti-elitist\, he rooted his art in his local community\, full of eccentric neighbours and wounded villagers who exude a perverse joy. His own life was not easy\, but by deploying muted colours and distorted shapes he manages to evoke redemption beyond suffering\, goodness at the heart of humanity. DESCRIPTION:Transforming Law into Gospel: Gerhard von Rad’s Response to the “De-Jewing” of the Old Testament in Nazi Germany \nThis lecture examines the work of Gerhard von Rad (1901-1971)\, one of the enduring giants of German Protestant biblical scholarship\, in the context of Nazi Germany. \nUsing previously unpublished archival material and photos\, Levinson tells the story of von Rad’s moral courage and shows how his social location had a lasting impact on how he read and taught the Bible. He also reassesses the strengths and challenges of von Rad’s place in biblical scholarship\, particularly as his attempt to rescue the Old Testament meant dissolving any meaningful connection between Deuteronomy and law or Judaism. \nPresented by Bernard M.
