SUMMARY:Translating the Psalms for Liturgical Use: Reflections on language\, theology and contemporary life
DESCRIPTION:Hebrew scholar and Anglican priest\, Matthew Anstey is translating the Psalter for liturgical use in Australian churches and beyond. In this public lecture\, Dr Anstey will share his translation of several psalms showing how his translations differ from the versions found in A Prayer Book for Australia (1995)\, identifying the interaction of theological\, musical\, scholarly\, and cultural concerns in this important work. \nMatthew will be focusing on Psalms 126\, 87\, 123\, and 51\, for those who would like to reflect on them beforehand. \nAbout Matthew\nAfter completing his doctoral studies in Biblical Hebrew linguistics in 2005\, Matthew was awarded an Australian Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship at Charles Sturt University (2006-2009)\, and he has been on the ARC College of Assessors since then. He then moved to Adelaide with his family to become Principal of St Barnabas Theological College (2010-2017). Since September 2022\, Matthew has been parish priest at St Theodore’s Anglican Church\, Toorak Gardens\, South Australia. \nMatthew was on the Doctrine Commission for the Anglican Church of Australia from 2014 to 2022. Matthew is an honorary research fellow at Charles Sturt University and lecturer in the University of Divinity. He founded and co-chaired the Biblical Hebrew Language and Linguistics Unit\, Society of Biblical Literature (International)\, and is a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the National Association of Professors of Hebrew (USA). He is also a trustee of the Australian Research Theological Foundation Incorporated (ARTFinc)\, and on the of the National Comprehensive Anglicanism Network. Matthew’s current scholarly work is on the Psalms – he is preparing a new translation of the Psalms for public worship\, with an accompanying commentary. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 Fritzsche Oration will be held at the ALC Library on 17 September commencing at 4:00pm (ACST). \nUnearthing the Treasures: Insights into the development and professionalisation of the Lutheran Lohe Library Collection\nTeaching and learning has been a core feature of Lutheranism in Australia from it’s earliest days\, and this has been supported by the development of one of Australia’s leading theological libraries. DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Wollaston Research Seminar on Monday 14th September at 2pm AWST both in-person and online.  \nJeremy Northcote to present: Between Life and Death: A Phenomenological and Cross‑Cultural Study of Near‑Death Experiences \nAbstract: Near‑death experiences (NDEs) arise at the intersection of bodily crisis\, consciousness\, interpretation\, and culture. They involve intense subjective states occurring under extreme physiological conditions\, yet they are also shaped by symbolic repertoires and narrative frameworks\, including traditional religious imagery\, that give those states meaning. This presentation examines the dual structure of NDEs: their striking cross‑cultural variation in imagery and symbolism\, and their deep phenomenological consistencies across traditions. It argues that NDEs accord with the staged architecture of Arnold van Gennep’s rite of passage — separation\, liminality\, and reincorporation — a universal pattern of transition that illuminates why NDEs feel both culturally specific and structurally familiar. The approach is situated in relation to Mircea Eliade and Victor Turner’s analyses of liminality and shamanic experience\, highlighting the threshold dynamics that shape consciousness during moments of profound rupture and transformation. \nJoin on Zoom

SUMMARY:Two-circuit economics: the future of economics
DESCRIPTION:Two circuit economics: the future of economics\npresented by Dr Sean McNelis\, Adjunct Research Fellow\, Swinburne University of Technology \nTwo-circuit economics offers an optimistic view of how transformations in an economy will lead to a just sharing of the world’s natural resources. It is the future of economics. \nChronic economic problems continue to plague every facet of human life. This seminar is an introduction to two-circuit economics which was discovered in the early 1940s by Bernard Lonergan\, a discovery ignored by the economics community. Two-circuit economics begins with facts and data\, rather than economic models. It distinguishes two distinct circuits of production\, a basic circuit and a surplus circuit. This structure is operative in all economies\, international\, national and regional. It is operative in firms of all sizes\, from small businesses to global corporations. Two-circuit economics reveals the key relationships by which to understand any economy and any economic event. \nThis is an introductory seminar which begins with data accessible to everyone seeking a better society and does not require specialist knowledge or training in economics. \nDr Sean McNelis is an Adjunct Research Fellow at Swinburne University of Technology. He has over 40 years’ experience in housing management\, housing policy and advocacy and\, housing research. \nOver the past 20 years at Swinburne University\, his research included: projects for the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI) on rental systems\, homelessness services\, asset management\, housing for older people and rent regulation; housing strategies for local government; housing affordability indicators\, and; quarterly reports on the private rental market in Victoria. In 2014\, he published\, Making Progress in Housing: A Framework for Collaborative Research (Routledge\, London)\, which outlines a new framework for research and policy called Functional Collaboration based on the work of Canadian theologian\, philosopher and economist\, Bernard Lonergan. \nHis interests include: social housing policy\, in particular housing finance and rental systems; housing for older persons; housing co-operatives; the foundations of housing research; futurology\, and; the economic and philosophic writings of Bernard Lonergan. \nHis publications can be found on his website: artfulhousing.com.au/publications. \nSchedule: 40 minute presentation and 30 minutes questions and discussion. \nThis is the first of three seminars on “two-circuit economics”. DESCRIPTION:The Inaugural Sugden Heritage Lecture\, ‘Keeping a Movement Moving’ is co-sponsored by the Australasian Centre for Wesleyan Research and Queen’s College\, University of Melbourne. It will be delivered in the Stafford Room at Queen’s on Thursday 3 September at 7pm by distinguished Wesley scholar\, Dr. Ted Campbell. The event will be followed by drinks and canapés in the Eakins Foyer. The Lecturer will also be live streamed via Zoom. Prior to his recent retirement\, Ted was Albert C. Outler Professor of Wesley Studies at Southern Methodist University’s Perkins School of Theology. He has edited several volumes of John Wesley’s letters in the critical edition of Wesley’s Works and is well positioned to highlight the significance of the autograph letters of Wesley held at Queen’s. \nThis lecture examines the remarkable collection of John Wesley letters preserved in the Queen’s College Library\, University of Melbourne\, with particular attention to the six letters addressed to John Francis Valton and the five addressed to Samuel Furly—the two correspondents most fully represented in the collection. It will also consider Wesley’s letter to Joseph Benson in the State Library of Victoria. Read individually\, these letters illuminate the pastoral concerns of an eighteenth-century evangelical leader. Read together\, with other letters in the collection\, they reveal something larger: Wesley’s persistent effort to keep the Methodist movement united\, disciplined\, and spiritually vital over more than half a century. The Melbourne letters offer more than a glimpse into Wesley’s private relationships. They provide an unusually rich window into the practical means by which one of Christianity’s most enduring renewal movements maintained its momentum. DESCRIPTION:In 1969\, the World Council of Churches launched its controversial Programme to Combat Racism. Over the next two decades\, the programme funded and supported Civil Rights activism in the USA\, anti-apartheid movements in South Africa\, and revolutionary groups in South America. What is less well known is that the programme made important contributions to anti-racist theologies and activism in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. \nUsing the work of the Programme to Combat Racism as a point of departure\, this lecture will explore the kinds of ideas and theological commitments that led New Zealand and Australian Christians to become involved in anti-racist activism in the 1970s and 1980s. Moreover\, it will suggest how this history can continue to provide valuable lessons for responding to racism and white supremacy today. \nMichael Mawson is a Pākehā (white) theologian and holds the Maclaurin Goodfellow Chair of Theological and Religious Studies at Waipapa Taumata Rau | University of Auckland. He previously worked at the United Theological College in Parramatta.
