DESCRIPTION:On Friday\, 15 May 2026\, members of the Whitley College Research Community\, including faculty\, teachers\, research students\, and honorary researchers\, are warmly invited to gather for a day of research-focused engagement. \nYou are welcome to join in person at the Box Hill campus or participate online. This will be a valuable opportunity to connect\, share in the life of Whitley’s research community\, and engage in thoughtful and enriching discussion. \nA highlight of the morning will be the online book launch at 11.00 am of ‘Chinese Christian Witness: Identity\, Creativity\, Transmission and Poetics’\, edited by Xiaoli Yang and Daryl Ireland. SUMMARY:Lonergan Australasia 2026 Autumn Seminar
DESCRIPTION:In the Lonergan Australasia 2026 Autumn Seminar in May\, Father Robin Koning SJ\, Director of the Australian Lonergan Centre will present on ‘The Culture has become a slum’: The Need for a Primary Dialectic of Culture. \nIn proposing a dialectics of history which can provide the general categories for theology\, Robert Doran develops Lonergan’s scale of values in a number of ways. He notes a series of dialectics within different levels of the scale\, notably the social and personal levels. With cultural values\, though\, while Doran draws on Lonergan’s account by distinguishing an everyday level of culture from a reflective level\, he does not present these in terms of a dialectic. Where he does speak of a dialectic of culture\, he sees this operating within the everyday level of culture in what he terms a secondary dialectic between anthropological and cosmological constitutive meanings. In this paper\, I will explore the possibility of and need for developing a primary dialectic of culture\, grounded in a series of hints in this direction in Lonergan’s own work. \nRobin currently serves as Provincial Assistant for Vocations\, which entails engagement in various young adult ministries\, including living at Bellarmine House in Sydney\, a small hostel for university students that the Jesuits run. Previously he taught systematic theology through the University of Divinity and served as Socius to the Provincial of the Jesuits in Australia. In the 1990s he worked in an Aboriginal parish in the Kimberley and has published a number of articles on inculturation\, based on his experience there\, and more generally on culture as a category in theology. He offers spiritual direction and gives workshops on Ignatian prayer and the Rules for Discernment of Spirits. \nHe holds a Doctor of Theology\, a Licentiate in Sacred Theology\, a Graduate Diploma of Arts (Aboriginal Studies)\, a Bachelor of Theology and a Bachelor of Science. \nRegister now\nWollaston Theological CollegeWollaston Theological College is a college of the University of Divinity from the Anglican tradition\, based in Perth\, Western Australia.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the next Wollaston Research Seminar on 11 May at 2pm AWST either in-person or online (via Zoom) for two short papers. \nPatrick Armstrong to present: John Ray: naturalist\, traveller\, theologian: Bringer of Order out of Chaos? \nAbstract: John Ray (1627-1705) has been described as ‘The point where science and theology meet’ as well as ‘The father of English natural history’ and ‘Where the adventure of modern science begins’. John was the son of the village blacksmith and the local herb-woman in Black Notley in rural Essex. A bright lad\, he was supported in studies at a local school and later Cambridge. He had a distinguished academic career\, managing to navigate the vicissitudes of the Civil War\, Oliver Cromwell’s Commonwealth and the Restoration until he was required to swear an oath that his conscience would not allow him to take. He resigned his fellowship\, and after an unsettled period in which he travelled widely\, he returned to his native village and wrote an impressive series of books on natural history in all its aspects\, philology and language … and theology. His theological writings emphasise the Creation of Order out of Chaos. His work in science echoes this theme. Theretofore the classification of plants and animals had been chaotic\, almost random\, and partly based on superstition. John Ray brought Order\, concentrating on the detailed and careful observation of organisms\, logical reasoning and basing the classification – into species and biological groups – on fundamental characteristics. And traces of this ‘search for Order’ can be seen in some of his other writings. John’s influence was far-reaching. Some of the biological groups he distinguished are still recognised. Conceptually he was far ahead of his time: he did not totally exclude the possibility of the mutability of organisms\, he thought that fossils might be the remains or traces of past life\, and he attempted early estimates of biodiversity. And he is an early example of that important genre\, the English parson-naturalist. \n  \nMark Jennings to present: Is there an Australian Anglican “Field?” Preliminary sketches. \nAbstract: In the work of Pierre Bourdieu\, constructing a “field” which disclosed the relative power relationships of a particular phenomenon was a critical first step in analysis. In this work in progress\, I will outline some of the available qualitative and quantitative data to sketch the outlines of a Bourdeisian “field” of the Anglican Diocese of Perth in the 1980s–1990s. As more data comes to light\, it is hoped that a picture of everyday Anglican identity in the Anglican Diocese of Perth during the “Peter Carnley era” (c. 1980s to early Noughties)\, revealing the position of those identifying as Anglican relative to Australian society\, will become apparent. Will this emerging vision challenge the simple narrative of declining numbers and significance of Anglicanism in particular (and Christianity in general)? DESCRIPTION:Join us online for the next CTC Seminar presented by Rev Dr Trevor Tibbertsma on Learn where there is Wisdom: A Theological Reading of Baruch 3:9-4:4. \nThis presentation is an overview of my forthcoming monograph on the Deuterocanonical book of Baruch as a source of enduring wisdom. Illuminated by distinct glimmers of a rich theology of revelation\, the chief hortatory goal of the sapiential exhortation of 3:9-4:4 in context is for readers to return to God through adherence to Scripture. This dynamic is\, in fact\, portrayed as something of a return from death to life\, surprisingly resonant with the Prodigal Son. Exploring the Greek poem through originating\, early Christian\, and modern academic contexts\, this study responds to a recent call for a fresh Christian interpretation that critically mediates between the early focus on a solitary verse as a prophecy of the Incarnation and the modern tendency to omit 3:38 as an interpolation. It is a theological reading insofar as it hypothetically grants Baruch’s subject matter as appropriately apprehended through serious theological reflection\, while allowing one’s conception of that subject matter to be shaped by what is exegeted from the text through a range of contexts.
