SUMMARY:Eucharist and Work: Fruit of the Earth\, Work of our Hands
DESCRIPTION:Engaging Your Faith Online Series\nIn the wake of Leo XIII’s social teaching\, the 1917 essay Eucharistie und Arbeit (Eucharist and Work) by the Polish–German Jesuit philosopher and theologian\, Erich Przywara\, reflects on the dynamic relation between the “work” of the Mass and the work of human labour in the Christian life. When engaged with a eucharistic attitude\, human labour can be a pathway to holiness and a means for the transformation of the world in Christ. The recent teaching of Leo XIV reflects on new challenges confronting human work in the age of artificial intelligence. What can we learn from the Eucharist to safeguard the dignity of “the work of human hands”? \nEngaging Your Faith is a series of short\, online presentations that invite participants to reflect on what it means to be people of faith in the contemporary world. DESCRIPTION:Engaging Your Faith Online Series\nThis session explores the recently published findings from research commissioned by the Australian Catholic Bishops. Titled “Thriving and Surviving in Ministry\,” it suggests that a broad discussion of these findings is helpful for the wider Church\, not only those groups working directly to support clergy. \nEngaging Your Faith is a series of short\, online presentations that invite participants to reflect on what it means to be people of faith in the contemporary world. DESCRIPTION:Engaging Your Faith Online Series\nAccountability is fast becoming a defining question for the Catholic Church today. This presentation explores what accountability means in Church governance: who exercises it\, who is subject to it\, and how canon law gives it shape. The session will draw on the Australian experience since the sexual abuse crisis and the vision of the Synod for a Synodal Church. \nEngaging Your Faith is a series of short\, online presentations that invite participants to reflect on what it means to be people of faith in the contemporary world. SUMMARY:Can a Scientist Believe in God?
DESCRIPTION:Engaging Your Faith Online Series\nMany people say (or fear?) that God and science don’t mix. In faith-based schools\, 60% of secondary students say Christianity and science conflict. This session is an introduction to the “conflict myth” and will offer some clues about how to understand the science–faith relationship as a harmonious one. \n(Note: this is a repeat of a session offered previously.) \nEngaging Your Faith is a series of short\, online presentations that invite participants to reflect on what it means to be people of faith in the contemporary world. SUMMARY:Synodality in the Life of the Church: History\, Theology\, and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Engaging Your Faith Online Series\nThis session will explore the history of synodality in the Church beginning with early synods and ecumenical councils. Vatican II was the recovery of a “conciliar” ecclesiology\, which\, with Pope Francis and the Australian Plenary Council\, developed into a new appreciation of synodality. Since his election\, Pope Leo XIV has insisted that synodality is now “normative” in the Church. \nEngaging Your Faith is a series of short\, online presentations that invite participants to reflect on what it means to be people of faith in the contemporary world. SUMMARY:Spirituality in a Secular Age: Charles Taylor meets Taylor Swift
DESCRIPTION:Engaging Your Faith Online Series\nAustralia’s “spiritual but not religious” population is growing every year. In this session\, we’ll draw on Charles Taylor’s A Secular Age to understand religious and secular faith in modern society and we’ll ask why a Taylor Swift concert might be someone’s idea of “church.” \nEngaging Your Faith is a series of short\, online presentations that invite participants to reflect on what it means to be people of faith in the contemporary world. SUMMARY:Wollaston Research Seminar | October
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Wollaston Research Seminar (in person or online via Zoom) on Monday 12th October at 2pm AWST. \nDr Suzanne Boorer to present: The Promise of the Land in the Priestly Narrative (Pg)\nAbstract\nAlthough the Priestly material in the Pentateuch is complex and consists of various levels there is strong support for identifying  a level within this that consists of a coherent narrative\, traditionally called Pg. It consists in a cosmic picture in Genesis 1-10*\, ancestral material\, including the promises of descendants\, land and to be their God (Gen 11-50*)\, and the unfolding of these promises in the exodus and the tabernacle instructions at Sinai (Exodus 1-40*). Where it concludes is debated\, with some ending it in Exodus with the tabernacle\, and others seeing it as continuing into Numbers. This has some bearing on how the relative importance and meaning of the land promise is understood.  Arguing that Pg extends into Numbers13-14*; 20*; 27:12-14\, I will explore how the land promise is perceived and how it interacts with the other two promises of descendants and to be their God in this material. This will involve delving into the trajectory and structural patterns of Pg\, including the parallels between the cosmic material in Genesis 1-10* and the story of the nation in Exodus 1-Num 27* in terms of the creation of the earth (Genesis1)/the nation (Exodus 7-40*) and the reversal of this in the flood Genesis 6-9*/the rebellion at the edge of the land (Num 13-14*\, 20*). Pertinent also is the timeless and visionary nature of the two scenarios that make up the creation of the nation in Exodus 7-14* and Exodus 16 – Num 20*\, arranged\, with Numbers 13-14*\, 20*\, along an itinerary that moves from Egypt to the edge of the promised land. It will be argued that the fulfilment of the land promise will only come about when the other two promises have been embodied by the nation in accordance with the vision of Exodus 7-40*\, and\, moreover\, that the land promise itself as ‘everlasting’ is a utopian hope that will always have a future dimension. \nPresenter\n \nThe Reverend Dr  Sue Boorer brings a wealth of experience to the role of Acting Formation Director of Wollaston Theological College\, having taught Hebrew Bible at Murdoch University and University of Divinity for many years. She has studied internationally\, achieving degrees from Melbourne University; Melbourne College of Divinity; and Yale. She was awarded her PhD at Emory University (Atlanta\, USA). Sue is recognised in international circles for her research on the Pentateuch\, and in particular the Priestly tradition. \n  \nTime and Date\n2.00 pm AWST\, Monday 12 October \nMode\nJoin the seminar online via the button below or in person at Wollaston Theological College\, 5 Wollaston Rd\, Mount Claremont WA \nJoin Seminar via Zoom\nWollaston Theological CollegeWollaston Theological College is a college of the University of Divinity from the Anglican tradition\, based in Perth\, Western Australia.

SUMMARY:Faith in Freedom and Democracy
DESCRIPTION:Professor Tim Stacey\, Endowed Professor\, Liberal Religion and Humanism\, Univ. of Humanistic Studies\, Utrecht\, The Netherlands.  Author of Saving Liberalism from Itself: The Spirit of Political Participation (2022). \nProfessor Stacey’s work is primarily concerned with restoring faith in freedom and democracy. He has written extensively on the connection between postliberal political theology and emergent sources of solidarity among those taking action on social justice and the environment. Amidst ongoing threats to freedom and democracy\, he places theology into dialogue with sociology and anthropology to argue that we must see politics as an act of collective faith that is carefully and repeatedly reenacted. He will discuss how faith is upheld\, altered\, and undermined. \nTime and Date\n4.00 pm – 5.00 pm AEST\, Friday 9 October 2026 \nMode\nJoin in person  \nCatholic Theological College\, 278 Victoria Parade\, East Melbourne\, VIC \nRegister\n  \nJoin online via Zoom \nJoin on Zoom\nMeeting ID: 886 4049 7099\nPassword: 356743 \nWollaston Theological CollegeWollaston Theological College is a college of the University of Divinity from the Anglican tradition\, based in Perth\, Western Australia.
