SUMMARY:Australian Christian Nationalism: a unique minority threat
DESCRIPTION:Australian Christian nationalism looks different from its more famous American counterpart — subtler\, less partisan\, without the rhetoric of divine exceptionalism or apocalypse. Relying on the mythology of a white Christian nation and reflecting a culturalised Christianism\, its national imaginary is fundamentally about belonging: where Australia ‘belongs’ in the world\, and who\, rightfully\, belongs in Australia. DESCRIPTION:The 2026 ACFT Conference program includes The Annual Janette Gray RSM Lecture delivered by Dr Mary Kate Holman titled: Boldness\, Courage\, and Truth: Reclaiming a Gift of the Spirit for Our Time. A celebration of the first decade of ACFT\, and launch of the 2027 ACFT Art Exhibition based on the theme of this years’ conference\, ‘Imagine Something Else: Communities\, Creativity\, Resistance’. \nDr Mary Kate Holman is a scholar of contemporary Catholic theology. She holds a BA from Georgetown University\, an MTS from Boston College’s School of Theology and Ministry\, and a PhD from Fordham University. Prior to her arrival at Fairfield\, Dr. Holman was Assistant Professor of Theology at Benedictine University in the suburbs of Chicago. Dr Holman’s teaching interests include Feminist Theology\, Ignatian Spirituality\, Vatican II\, and Spirituality & Social Justice. Her research interests encompass Ecclesiology\, Nouvelle Théologie\, Marie-Dominique Chenu\, Vatican II\, and Feminist Theology. \nDr Holman published Marie-Dominique Chenu and the Signs of the Times through University of Notre Dame Press in 2025. She published an English translation of Chenu’s Saulchoir: A School of Theology with Joseph Komonchak in 2023. Dr Holman’s writing has appeared in the Journal of Jesuit Higher Education\, Theological Studies\, and Commonweal. \nIn a time marked by intersecting crises\, narratives of disaster and nevertheless deep possibilities\, we invite fresh perspectives to enact and sustain hope and courage. \nWhere and why does hope flourish? What sustains commitment and resistance in times of trial? What space can be made for dissonance and dissent? How do people engage and encourage others of like mind and heart? What resources can we find in our contexts and traditions? How do communities cultivate creative practices of transformation? DESCRIPTION:BOLDNESS\, COURAGE\, AND TRUTH: Reclaiming a Gift of the Spirit for our Time\nOur present global age can feel like an overwhelming series of overlapping crises compounded by declining trust in institutions and disorienting post-truth” culture. Does the Christian spiritual tradition have resources that speak to this moment\, that might offer an alternative to helplessness\, despair\, and apathy? This talk surfaces the ancient notion of parrhesia\, habit of bold\, courageous truth-telling both in what one says and how one lives. While early Christians embraced parrhesia as gift of the Holy  Spirit\, over time it became displaced by competing values like silence and obedience. Tracing recent efforts in the Catholic Church to reclaim parrhesia\, the talk turns to three theologians who have exemplified this virtue both in their published writings and in their lives: Jacques Dupuis\, Elizabeth Johnson\, and Ivone Gebara.  These figures offer valuable lessons in maintaining the interior freedom to speak truth boldly and courageously\, remaining spiritually grounded and realistically hopeful\, especially while encountering the limitations of their institutions. \n \nDr Mary Kate Holman is assistant professor of Religious Studies at Fairfield University in Connecticut\, USA. SUMMARY:Labourism and the Common Good: Australia’s Democratic Post-Liberal Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary debates about post-liberalism are often framed as a reaction against the excesses of neoliberalism and the cultural individualism of the late liberal settlement. Calls to recover the common good\, re-embed markets within society\, restore the dignity of work\, and rebuild institutions of belonging have gained traction across both the political left and right. This paper argues that Australia need not import these ideas from Britain\, Europe or the United States because it already possesses a distinctive democratic post-liberal tradition: labourism. \nDrawing on Australia’s political history\, Dr Dyrenfurth argues that labourism has long understood freedom not as radical individual autonomy but as something sustained by families\, unions\, faith communities\, voluntary associations and the nation itself. Far from being merely an economic movement concerned with wages and redistribution\, labourism advanced a moral vision rooted in reciprocity\, obligation and the common good.
