SUMMARY:Wollaston Research Seminar | October
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the next Wollaston Research Seminar (in person or online via Zoom) on Monday 12th October at 2pm AWST. \nDr Suzanne Boorer to present: The Promise of the Land in the Priestly Narrative (Pg)\nAbstract\nAlthough the Priestly material in the Pentateuch is complex and consists of various levels there is strong support for identifying  a level within this that consists of a coherent narrative\, traditionally called Pg. It consists in a cosmic picture in Genesis 1-10*\, ancestral material\, including the promises of descendants\, land and to be their God (Gen 11-50*)\, and the unfolding of these promises in the exodus and the tabernacle instructions at Sinai (Exodus 1-40*). Where it concludes is debated\, with some ending it in Exodus with the tabernacle\, and others seeing it as continuing into Numbers. This has some bearing on how the relative importance and meaning of the land promise is understood.  Arguing that Pg extends into Numbers13-14*; 20*; 27:12-14\, I will explore how the land promise is perceived and how it interacts with the other two promises of descendants and to be their God in this material. This will involve delving into the trajectory and structural patterns of Pg\, including the parallels between the cosmic material in Genesis 1-10* and the story of the nation in Exodus 1-Num 27* in terms of the creation of the earth (Genesis1)/the nation (Exodus 7-40*) and the reversal of this in the flood Genesis 6-9*/the rebellion at the edge of the land (Num 13-14*\, 20*). Pertinent also is the timeless and visionary nature of the two scenarios that make up the creation of the nation in Exodus 7-14* and Exodus 16 – Num 20*\, arranged\, with Numbers 13-14*\, 20*\, along an itinerary that moves from Egypt to the edge of the promised land. It will be argued that the fulfilment of the land promise will only come about when the other two promises have been embodied by the nation in accordance with the vision of Exodus 7-40*\, and\, moreover\, that the land promise itself as ‘everlasting’ is a utopian hope that will always have a future dimension. \nPresenter\n \nThe Reverend Dr  Sue Boorer brings a wealth of experience to the role of Acting Formation Director of Wollaston Theological College\, having taught Hebrew Bible at Murdoch University and University of Divinity for many years. She has studied internationally\, achieving degrees from Melbourne University; Melbourne College of Divinity; and Yale. She was awarded her PhD at Emory University (Atlanta\, USA). Sue is recognised in international circles for her research on the Pentateuch\, and in particular the Priestly tradition. \n  \nTime and Date\n2.00 pm AWST\, Monday 12 October \nMode\nJoin the seminar online via the button below or in person at Wollaston Theological College\, 5 Wollaston Rd\, Mount Claremont WA \nJoin Seminar via Zoom\nNaomi WolfeNaomi Wolfe is the Dean of Learning and Teaching at the University of Divinity. SUMMARY:Dean’s Listening Project
DESCRIPTION:Invitation from Naomi Wolfe\, Dean of Learning and Teaching \nLearning\, teaching and learning together at the University of Divinity\nAs I begin my role as Dean of Learning and Teaching\, I want to spend time listening. \nThe University of Divinity is a diverse community of colleges\, students\, academics\, professional staff\, adjuncts\, researchers\, teachers and learners. Each of us experiences learning and teaching at the University differently – and those experiences matter. \nThe Dean’s Listening Project is an opportunity for members of our wider University community to come together with me for conversation about what helps us to learn and teach well. \nI want to hear what you think a new Dean of Learning and Teaching should know. \n\nWhat is working well?\nWhere do you experience excellent learning and teaching?\nWhat helps you to succeed?\nWhat gets in the way?\nWhat kinds of support make a difference?\nWhere do you see opportunities for innovation\, collaboration or change?\nAnd what could we do together to create learning and teaching environments in which people can flourish?\n\nThese conversations are not intended to be a formal survey or a consultation with predetermined answers. They are an opportunity to listen\, learn\, ask questions and get to know one another. \nI am particularly interested in hearing about the experience\, knowledge and ideas that people bring from across our university community – including experiences that may not always be visible in formal University conversations. \n  \nJoin a conversation\nA series of listening conversations will be offered both online via Zoom and in person (at St Paschals Campus\, Box Hill). You are very welcome to attend more than one session if more than one conversation is relevant to you. \nYou can register for one session or as many sessions as you would like. \nPlease choose the conversation – or conversations – that best reflect your experience: \nCurrent students\nA broad conversation about students’ experiences of learning\, teaching\, assessment\, support and belonging across the University. \nAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community\nA dedicated conversation for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students\, staff and community members about learning\, teaching\, culture\, belonging\, self-determination and what the University needs to understand and do well. \nLGBTIQA+ / Rainbow community\nA conversation about creating learning and teaching environments where people can participate\, belong and flourish\, including experiences of inclusion\, safety and community. \nHDR students\nA conversation focused on higher degree research experiences\, supervision\, research culture\, academic formation\, support and the transition through HDR study. \nAssociate Academics and Adjunct staff\nA conversation for adjuncts and others who contribute to the University’s teaching and learning community\, including the opportunities and challenges of teaching across colleges. \nMature-aged students\nA conversation about returning to study\, balancing study with work and family responsibilities\, pathways into higher education\, and the kinds of support that enable mature-aged students to succeed. \nStudents with disability and accessibility needs\nA conversation about accessibility\, participation\, reasonable adjustments\, learning environments and what enables students to thrive. \nPasifika community\nA conversation recognising Pacifica/Pasifika experiences\, knowledge\, cultures and perspectives within the University’s learning and teaching community. \nAcademic staff\nA conversation about teaching practice\, curriculum\, assessment\, academic formation\, collegiality\, professional development and the conditions that enable excellent teaching. \nProfessional (non-academic) staff\nA conversation about the many ways professional staff contribute to student learning\, support\, curriculum delivery and the wider learning and teaching environment. \nWider University community\nA conversation open to University community members who have an interest in learning and teaching at the University of Divinity and its colleges. \n  \nCome as you are. Bring your experience. You do not need to prepare a presentation or provide formal feedback. You might bring a story about a particularly good learning experience\, something that has been difficult\, an idea you have been wondering about\, a practice that works brilliantly in your college\, or simply a question you think the University should be asking. \nI want to listen to the wisdom that already exists across our University. \nThe Dean’s Listening Project will help shape my understanding of the University’s learning and teaching strengths\, opportunities and challenges\, and contribute to the work we undertake together in the months ahead. \nI look forward to meeting you\, hearing about your experiences and learning with you. \nNaomi Wolfe\nDean of Learning and Teaching\nUniversity of Divinity \n  \n \nNaomi WolfeNaomi Wolfe is the Dean of Learning and Teaching at the University of Divinity. SUMMARY:Synodality in the Life of the Church: History\, Theology\, and Practice
DESCRIPTION:Engaging Your Faith Online Series\nThis session will explore the history of synodality in the Church beginning with early synods and ecumenical councils. Vatican II was the recovery of a “conciliar” ecclesiology\, which\, with Pope Francis and the Australian Plenary Council\, developed into a new appreciation of synodality. Since his election\, Pope Leo XIV has insisted that synodality is now “normative” in the Church. \nEngaging Your Faith is a series of short\, online presentations that invite participants to reflect on what it means to be people of faith in the contemporary world. SUMMARY:Eucharist and Work: Fruit of the Earth\, Work of our Hands
DESCRIPTION:Engaging Your Faith Online Series\nIn the wake of Leo XIII’s social teaching\, the 1917 essay Eucharistie und Arbeit (Eucharist and Work) by the Polish–German Jesuit philosopher and theologian\, Erich Przywara\, reflects on the dynamic relation between the “work” of the Mass and the work of human labour in the Christian life. When engaged with a eucharistic attitude\, human labour can be a pathway to holiness and a means for the transformation of the world in Christ. The recent teaching of Leo XIV reflects on new challenges confronting human work in the age of artificial intelligence. What can we learn from the Eucharist to safeguard the dignity of “the work of human hands”? \nEngaging Your Faith is a series of short\, online presentations that invite participants to reflect on what it means to be people of faith in the contemporary world. Experienced academics from Catholic Theological College present on a variety of topics. \nPresented by Very Rev. Dr Kevin Lenehan \n  \nEvent details\nWhen \nMonday 26 October\n7 – 8.30pm (AEDT) \nLocation \nOnline \nCost \n$25 per session: General audience\n$40 per session: Teachers applying for Catholic school accreditation \n  \nRegistration is essential!\nRegister Now\nAll sessions are booked directly through Humanitix. \nPlease note that registrations close at 5pm two business days before each session. \n  \nAdditional Information\nFor more information about this session\, including accreditation\, visit the CTC website or view our flyer. \nFor queries about the sessions or accreditation\, please contact the CTC Office or call us on 03 9412 3333. \n  \nNaomi WolfeNaomi Wolfe is the Dean of Learning and Teaching at the University of Divinity. SUMMARY:AI\, Transhumanism\, and Magnifica Humanitas: An Introduction to the Issues
DESCRIPTION:Engaging Your Faith Online Series\nYoung people today can expect to live forever\, but AI will run the world.” At least that is the view of some techno-enthusiasts. As we do so\, we will dip into Pope Leo XIV’s first encyclical\, Magnifica Humanitas\, which takes up these issues. \nEngaging Your Faith is a series of short\, online presentations that invite participants to reflect on what it means to be people of faith in the contemporary world. Experienced academics from Catholic Theological College present on a variety of topics. \nPresented by Rev. SUMMARY:The Gospel According to Matthew: A Tapestry
DESCRIPTION:Engaging Your Faith Online Series\nIn this liturgical Year of Matthew\, come and see the complexity of this Gospel by picturing it as a tapestry. We look at the overall thread from beginning to end: observing the weave back and forth between Old and New Testaments; noticing the tension between Jesus and leaders\, Judeans\, and Gentiles; picking up threads across the Gospel; stopping to view a couple of specific scenes; and stepping back to view the whole picture. \nEngaging Your Faith is a series of short\, online presentations that invite participants to reflect on what it means to be people of faith in the contemporary world.
