Wollaston Research Seminar

Thursday, 11 May, 3:00 pm4:30 pm AWST

Join us either in-person or online for our third Wollaston Research Seminar of 2023 on May 11th at 3pm AWST.

Rhys Roberts-Brown: “The Cosmic Song: Cosmography and Cosmology in Augustine’s De Musica

Abstract: Augustine’s De Musica has received a small surge of attention in the last thirty years, with many scholars disagreeing on the intention behind the text, metaphysical and ontological. This paper adds to the growing literature by reading De Musica using Remi Brague’s cosmogony, cosmography and cosmology taxonomy as a heuristic. In so doing, it seeks to demonstrate that Augustine is not seeking to escape the material, temporal world or to stretch the perceived world on a procrustean bed of total cosmology. Rather, he seeks to provide an understanding of the human/world relationship that accounts for both perceptible and imitable structure in the order of creation, as well as the phenomenological experience of the world from which iterative knowledge is derived, to the end of moving through the world well.

Register below to receive any pre-reading. This will be circulated, along with the Zoom link, to registered participants in the week prior to the seminar.
