The Making of Sacred Space: Beauty and Exegesis in Coptic Iconography

Sunday, 18 February, 6:00 pm10:00 pm AEDT

While Coptic iconography has often been presented as an exclusively specialist’s discipline, the reality is that the principles of iconography can also be applied to the way we understand liturgy and scripture, and by extension, our whole life in Christ. The goal of Coptic iconography is not to create a secret language of signs and symbols, but to use symbolism (symbolon, literally throwing together) to train our eyes to view the whole world as a unified icon of God’s Kingdom. This lecture will explore the meaning of sacred spaces, delving into the purpose of the space itself and the iconographic programming within the church. It will discuss how these elements synergise with hymnography, scripture, and liturgy to guide our eyes in viewing the world as beauty—a joyful revelation of God’s love.
