John 2:13–22 and Gospel Hermeneutics

Tuesday, 17 September, 2:00 pm3:00 pm AEST

Presented by Reverend Dr Stephen Hultgren, Australian Lutheran College Lecturer in New Testament
John 2:13–22 is paradigmatic for the hermeneutical strategy of the Gospel of John, that is, for the way that the fourth gospel interprets and represents the Jesus story. Exegesis of the pericope provides key insights into how ‘signs’ function in the gospel, how the gospel remembers Jesus, and the role that the gospel assigns to the disciples as witnesses to Jesus. These insights also invite the question: What does John’s Gospel contribute to a hermeneutic of the gospels within a canonical perspective?
